Rebellion! Will the Lives of the Animals Improve?

"Man is the only creature that consumes without producing," states Old Major, the older, benevolent boar who first inspires the animals on Manor Farm to consider rebellion rather continued submission. During his speech he clearly points out all the reasons why life would be better for the animals if they were to assume control over their own situation and expel Farmer Jones. However, as he speaks, we get the perfect opportunity to watch the animals and learn about them. What particular characteristics or stereotypes do you begin to associate with what animal and why do you think that characteristic could help or hinder a successful rebellion?

  1. the pigs in the farm are the smartest animals. because they have the wish of having the farm all to themselves they have learned to read and write. they have also used books and have observed the humans to learn how to do human tasks that have to get done in the farm in order for them to survive. because they have given the time to learn all of this i feel that they are going to have a successful rebellion and that if all the animals follow their rules then they will succeed in having a farm ruled by only animals.

  2. Mollie shows off her self-centered attitude during Old Major's speech, and throughout chapters one and two. I believe this will make her very selfish when it comes to the rebellion because she only cares about herself, and not the freedom of the animals as a whole. This may come to an issue because the idea that Old Major had was for the animals to unite and rebel against Mr. Jones together, not induvidually.

  3. Well first can begin with the cat. The cat has seem to be the lazy one. The character that disappears when ever there is work to be done. The cat also tries to manipulate the birds that if they were “friends” then they would perch on his paw. Which shows the natural instincts of a cat.
Mollie is the selfish and self centered one who is obsessed with ribbons. This might actually be her weakness. The new commandments said that no animal should wear any clothing and the ribbons were considered clothing. Her obsession with herself and her beauty may be her downside. Someone could easily persuade her to change if it benefits herself.
Boxer is the muscle of the farm. He’s not very bright and he could be manipulated the easiest. His motto is to only work hard. This also foreshadows that he may not be around for long. Benjamin the donkey was talking about how he has lived a long life because he barely does any work, but on the other hand the only thing Boxer does is work.
The constant debating between Napoleon and Snowball is kind of setting up the division between the farm. I have a feeling that because they can not agree on anything that Snowball will have his side of the ffarm and Napoleon will have his side.
Now Squealer is the persuasive one to watch out for. He has a very good way with words. He can turn, twist or blow up explanations to the other animals. He was the ring leader when it came to talk all the animals into saving all the milk and apples for the pigs.
The differences between each animal is setting up their own defeats.

  4. Each animal on the farm has particular characteristics that will affect their position on the farm. The pigs are cleverest, so not only will they be able to begin the rebellion and lead it, but also be able to manipulate the animals for their benefit. Mollie, the white mare, is self-absorbed and lazy, so in a rebellion she would not help much. Boxer, the cart-horse, is strong and determined, and would be a definite help physically in a rebellion, but because he is a little slow he may be easily manipulated. Benjamin, the donkey, is cynical and surly, but devoted to Boxer, so although he will not act in a rebellion for himself, he might for his friend. The cat also will not help much, as she can never make up her mind or show up for work. Finally, the raven, Mason, will present trouble, as he is extremely loyal to Farmer Jones and a gossip. It seems there are more animals that would be a hindrance than there are who would be a help.

  5. Each animal in the book as a certain characteristic that perseveres the they way that they will help with the rebellion process. The pigs who are shown as being very clever and sly will be able to lead and carry out the rebellion through manipulation. Mollie wont really help to much because she is lazy and self- centered. Boxer will help with the physical work or chasing the humans out because he is persevered as strong and determined.

  6. Every animal has a diffrent charateristic that helps out the main mission of their whole plan. Out of all the animals the pigs seem to be labeled as the "brains." So i think that Snowball characteristics could help or hinder a successful rebellion. Snowball is intelligent, and passionate about this mission. Also throughout the chapters we as a class read, it seems that Snowball gains more trust and loyalty from other aninmals it seems to me that snowball is already looked at as the leader and master-mind of the whole farm.

  7. While reading the first few chapters in this book there are a few animals that i have noticed certain characteristics with. Boxer is an extremely strong horse but he is said to be unintelligent and he is also easily manipulated by other animals. Benjamin is a smart donkey, even as smart as the pigs. Although smart he is very cynical but manages to also have some kindness within himself as well. This kindness is his loyalty to boxer. lastly is Mollie who is a pretty mare. She is not at all smart and only cares about herself. We see this when she is found in Mrs, Jones's room putting ribbons on. All these animals have different characteristics which will affect the book in some sort of way.

  8. In a way, many of the animals can hinder the progress of their rebellion. The pigs aren't really workers, they're talkers. They will become the leaders and might try and pull the strings so everything works out nice for them. Mollie only cares about herself, and will usually only do what has the best outcome for her. Boxer could help physically rebel, but he is easily manipulated and can be turned against his friends. Also there's the cat, who always seems to skip work and only show up at meal time because he is lazy.

  9. All the animals have very different characterists that can help or hurt all of the animals goals. For instance the pigs are very intelligent they take time to plan the things out but at the same time they do it to benefit them the most which may hurt the movement. Boxer, he tries to work really hard to keep motivated to accomplish animalism, which helps their goal. The donkey,or the cat i feel as though wont really make a difference because they are the ones who mostly dont put much effort or attention into the accomplishment all the animals are trying to reach. As for the rest of the animals i feel as though so far they all are pitching in to help their movement.

  10. Each animal in the book tends to take on certain characteristics similar to those of humans. Some of these for example are the pigs who are the brainworkers they are clever and smart are are the overall leaders of the bunch. The horses such as Mollie and Boxer are not the sharpest tools in the shed. Mollie is self absorbed and cares less about the rebellion and more about herself and her looks. Boxer is strong and a hard worker willing to sacrifice for the team but he is not one to create waves and think for himself. The cat is somewhat lazy only looking to chime in when it will bring him or her benefit. These characteristics will both help the rebellion and hurt it in different ways such as boxer the hard worker to the cat and mollie who have other agendas.

  11. The pigs are called names as "the brain workers and the cleverest". By the pigs having the characteristic of being smart, they do have a great help of knowledge towards the rebellion. The pigs have the intelligence to organize and lead there fellow farm animals to a successful rebellion. The pigs was one of the dominate animals involved in the rebellion. Boxer was hard working and very strong. He also was a huge help towards the rebellion with his physical strength. Mollie on the other hand is selfish in many ways, so her being really is not a help towards a successful rebellion. Mollie wouldn't be of any help is because the key to a success rebellion is team work, which Mollie lacks.
